As we get closer and closer to the end of Macross Frontier (Maybe just season 1?) there are many questions still left unanswered - Why does Alto look like a woman? How can Ranka’s hair move on its own? Just what kind of STD does Sheryl have? Is Michael a pedo-freak? But the biggest question of all being just who will end with Alto, Ranka or Sheryl. Well here is our take, be sure to vote below with your opinion.
Odd of Sheryl Winning - 50%
Well if you strictly based it on the level of lust Alto has for each girl, we’d say Sheryl has the advantage. It’s quite obvious that Alto despite his girlish looks wants Sheryl’s hot-bod. Which means he is more physically attracted to Sheryl than Ranka. But would Sheryl be a good match for Alto?
Pros for Alto x Sheryl
- Sheryl could turn Alto from a boy to a man, in more ways than one. And everyone knows this guy seriously needs to man up.
- We have a feeling Sheryl is probably great in bed.
- She’s Rich, Alto could retire from SMS and live of her wealth
Cons for Sheryl X Alto
- Even though Alto lusts for her, we’re not sure he loves her
- Sheryl doesn’t have the personality you would want in a gf - she’s too much of a diva and too witchy at times.
- She’s diseased and could likely die soon.
The last point is the reason why Sheryl doesn’t score higher. She seems to have some kind of incurable disease. And although it likely won’t happen, there is still an outside chance she may die.
Odds of Ranka Winning - 45%
We think that unlike Sheryl, Alto actually does love Ranka. The question is though does Alto love Ranka like a little sister (& not in the Kana Little Sister kinda way) or does he love her like a gf. At this point it’s hard to say. One thing is for sure - Alto doesn’t lust after Ranka they way he does Sheryl.
Pros for Alto X Ranka
- Ranka actually loves Alto, unlike Sheryl who just wants to sex him up.
- Ranka has a better personality then Sheryl (Hey - it’s not all about looks people)
- Ranka doesn’t have any STDs - always a plus
- No worries for Alto - Ranka’s also a virgin
- Since Ranka is part Zentradi, it means their future kids will have superpowers?
Cons for Ranka X Alto
- Being intimate with Ranka maybe be illegal
- Alto might get embarrassed / ridiculed / beaten up for going out with some one who looks all of 13
- Since she’s super famous they will be dogged by the Paparazzi.
- Their offspring might be able to give birth to/ command the Vajra?
All said we think that Ranka is more the little sister material, so we have to give the slight edge to Sheryl. But 45 + 50 = 95%, what about the remaining 5%? Well….

We think Michael womanizing ways are really just a front, and that he has a huge crush on Alto. And make no mistake, it these two were to hookup - Alto would be the woman of the relationship.

Frankly, I’m still pretty torn. I mean. On the one hand… Ranka sort of has the feel of destined girl about here with the whole pining for love and Alto helping her find out who she is as a person. But there’s also an outside chance that her destiny is to be the Vajra Queen, and that she’ll need to take command of the Vajra and lead them to another part of the galaxy so they’ll leave Frontier alone. And even if she does stay, Ranka could end up in the Minmei role.
Sheryl… Yeah, I didn’t see her as romance material at first, but more and more she’s putting up a lot of flags. She’s still high maintenance, and she still has that disease. But I honestly don’t expect her to die. But… Hm. Will she find true love with Alto, or is she destined to be a loner forever? That’s the other thing. Ranka could still conceivably find love elsewhere (Heck, I get the feeling Nanase would love to woo her if she thought there was a chance she was into girls), but Sheryl, at this point, seems to need someone who’s not afraid of her fame to break through to her. Alto and Michael are the only 2 guys who have come close to that, and Michael is Klan’s boy, whether he likes it or not.
Alto’s infuriatingly hard to read because one minute he is sneaking into the back window of Ranka’s bedroom, and the next he is running through the streets in the rain looking for Sheryl. Both could easily be seen as romance flags, but since he’s doing BOTH, it’s just confusing. Michael’s definitely right in that he needs to man up and choose, but he’s treated them so “equally” that it’s hard to say if he has feelings for either at all. Even the usual blushing hasn’t really been much of an indicator, since he doesn’t do unless the girls all but force themselves on him in a manner that would make any straight male blush.
So yeah. I can’t choose, dangit. I’m slightly leaning toward Ranka, but I think Alto and Sheryl would make an incredibly sexy couple.
Mostly I’m focusing on Klan/Michael for my shipping needs these days. Their relationship is getting much more interesting.

I am a bit biased towards Sheryl and Alto. And while all three characters are ‘growing up’ a bit due to the events taking place around them, I tend to see Alto’s feelings towards Ranka as more a love for a family member than romantic. If MF plays by the typical rules too, the two who hate each other at first will end up together. Yeesh.
And am I the only one who thinks Sheryl’s microphone looks like a lightsaber handle?

Sheryl camp all the way. ESPECIALLY after how Ranka behaved on Episode 20. Sheryl is the most mature of the two, and although Ranka is lovely, she has a long way to go before being emotionally prepared for a relationship.
