Macross Frontier EP 19 vs Code Geass R2 EP 19

You know we’ve been big fans of MF since the start of the series and up until a couple of weeks ago we would have sworn we would be bigger fans of MF than CGR2.  But Code Geass R2 has really brought it over the last couple of episodes and we are having a hard time picking our favorite.  But when it comes to episode 19, we think there is a clear winner.

Story

We don’t know if it’s CGR2 19 that wins or if it’s MF 19 that loses this category.

We were expecting a lot to happen in the Frontier episode 19, but we were rather disappointed with the overall results. Honestly this kinda felt like a filler episode. Really the big plot advancements were rather minor.  First we have the plot to kill President Glass - kinda expected don’t you think?  But he didn’t get killed this episode.  So it’s more of a building point.  The other reveal was that Ai-kun was pregnant with Vajra babies.  Kinda important we guess - but nothing to get excited over.

But what made MF lose this category might have been this ridiculous love triangle.  How could one “man” be in the middle of a love triangle when he doesn’t even love the girls that are after him?  (We’ll that’s our take on it anyways).  Think about it - have you ever seen Alto say anything that would indicate he had romantic feelings for either Ranka or Sheryl.  Have you ever seen Alto make any kind of move on either of the girls.  The evidence suggest that we can’t even determine if Alto has hormones let alone feelings of love or lust for Sheryl or Ranka.  We have to agree with reader Jobril, Alto-hime is really starting to piss us off.   Even Luca has manned up more than this flake. Could Alto be the worst Mecha-Pilot-Hero ever?

On the other hand Code Geass R2 19 was a winner in our books.  We approve of the way Lelouch broke down after Nunally’s death.  (We’re still not 100% convinced that Nunally died)  Seeing Lelouch finally tear one off Rolo brought us happiness.  But the best part of 19 was definitely the big plot advancement of the Black Knights finally learning of Zero’s identity. The way Toudou, Ougi and the rest found out took us by surprise.  We never thought that Prince Schnizel would be the one to tell the Black Knights.  He played it really well.

Lelouch being ‘betrayed’ by his crew was also played out really well.  If we were in their shoes we probably would have done the exact same thing and given up Lelouch.  But honestly does Ougi actually believe that Schnizel would let them keep Japan?  They guy has FLEIA at his disposal!  No ways Schnizel keeps his word here.  But the betrayal was exactly what the series needed to kick the series in to the next and final gear.

Also looking back on CGR2 19 we can only deduce that the reason Rolo saved Lelocuh was because of his crazy man love for him.  Rolo’s lust for Lulu must have been so strong that it overpowered all his logic and reasoning.

And finally bonus points for Suzaku going completely off the wagon and turn 100% nutty.

Mecha Action

Call this a win by default for Geass.  Macross Frontier has no Mecha action in it this episode, and Gode Geass had a little during scene of Rolo’s rescue of Lulu.  We don’t know about everyone else, but we felt no sympathy for Rolo during that scene.  Rolo is a cold blooded killer that went and off’d Shirley and probably would have killed Nunnally if given the chance.  And that’s all that we remembered in the final scenes before his death. Good riddance in our opinion.

This one is a tough call actually.  One side we had Suzaku going completely off his rocker and busting out in a mechanical laugh.  And we had Rolo dying - something we have wanted for a good 12 episodes now.

However we decided to give the win to Macross Frontier here for Ranka’s awesome concert performance.  We don’t know what the name of the second song was but we love it. Her concert might not have been on par with Sheryl’s from earlier on in the series but we still liked it. Now the only thing that’s left is the final Sheryl x Ranka conert  (where Sheryl dies from her disease?).
