Since we were off last week, we’ll call the battle of episode 17 a draw.  Now that both shows have entered the prelude to final battle which one performed better and which failed to arouse - we’ll find out as we analyze episode 18 of Code Geass and Macross Frontier?  Let it Begin!

We like Kallen better - u?

Story

One thing about Code Geass EP 18 that we want to address first is that we don’t think that we are not 100% certain Nunnally actually died during the FLEIA incident.  So while it doesn’t look good for our Code Geass Death Watch prediction right now, let’s wait for confirmation that Nunnanlly died before calling it an epic fail. But if Nunnally did die that means she technically died at the hands of Suzaku, but really it would have been Lelouch’s fault that she got taken out.  Now that would really be one hell of a mind-f— for both Suzaku and Lelouch.  With Nannally gone Lelouch would have nothing to live for, meaning he could go really postal at anytime now.  The possibility of Nunnally’s death, plus the death of Guilford and Asahina was enough development for a normal episode, but when you consider the deployment of FLEIA and the death of the Vampire, then this episode really packed a punch.

We were way, way off if Nunnally died

That’s not to say that Code Geass completely wiped the floor with Macross Frontier EP 18. The whole long distance fold was intriguing. But we’re not buying the Vajra are attracted by the energy given off by the fold.  We say they are under the control of team Cyborg Grace.  But the big reveal has to be what we all saw coming… Sheryl is diseased - and not the STD variety.  Now the question is will she die?  Tough to say, but we say yes - Sheryl Nome will die.  How she goes out is hard to predict - singing to death perhaps.  Overall however the story of episode 18 didn’t excite us as much as Code Geass EP 18.

Winner: Code Geass R2

Mecha Action

Macross Frontier has been dominating this category over the past few weeks, but this week saw some epic battles in Code Geass.  But truth be told, it is Kallen’s return that carried Code Geass to victory. What’s your opinion on the new Gurren? We love it.  Reminds us a little of the Strike Freedom from Gundam Seed Destiney in some ways.  But damn is it ever powerful.  Neither Suzaku or Bradley could get a scratch on it.  You can’t call Kallen’s battle with Suzaku or Bradley epic because they got completely owned by the Gurren.  But it was awesome to watch Kallen in action - she completely demolished Bradley, and the Lancelot couldn’t touch her.  The Pudding Earl really did some wicked upgrades, the coolest looking by far being the red energy ring.  With her latest performance on the battlefield can we call Kallen the greatest female Mecha Pilot in anime history?

Yeah the new Gurren is awesome and it’s got pink wings

Macross Frontier’s mecha battles looked as good as ever, but we are kinda getting spoiled by its beauty.  You kinda expect them at this point, so they need to start having some death to these battles, otherwise they run the risk of becoming stale. The only interesting part of the battle in Macross Frontier EP 18 was seeing the Macross mothership fire its cannon for the first time. It was like a mini Death-Star.  However, this wasn’t enough to prevent Geass from taking the victory.

Winner: Code Geass R2 EP18

Fangasmic

Nothing fangasmic really happened during this episode of Macross Frontier this week, so it looks like this will be a clean sweep for Code Geass. Especially since this was a multi-gasmic episode. First we had Kallen taking her revenge her sweet sweet revenge on Bradley.  Turning his line about life back on Bradley before killing him was epic.  Call that org number one.  Org number 2 would be seeing in the new gurren in action. Don’t know exactly what the red energy ring does, but it looks freakin cool. Org #3 was finally seeing the FLEIA in action. It will be interesting to see how the Black Knights try to counter it.

Winner: Code Geass EP 18

He don’t look so good

This Weeks Winner: Code Geass EP 18.

  1. One thing that really annoyed me about CG EP 18 this week though: Why was Lelouche so trusting of Rolo? I would think after the Shirley incident, he’d realize that Rolo was unstable as hell.

My thought was that he had some ace up his sleeve that would send Rolo on a wild goose chase and end in his betrayal, but it seems like he genuinely trusted Rolo to save Nunnally. It’s weird that I have been able to accept CG’s plot with a minimum of protest up til now, but that point bothers me to no end.

However, I greatly enjoy watching Kallen kick ass, even if I knew SUzaku’s Geass would save him. I hope she eventually has a chance to kill Suzaku for real and ride off into the sunset with Lelouche — not that I believe that will actually happen.

I also agree with you that Nunna-chan isn’t dead. I’m guessing Charles saved her for his own purposes, if only because he isn’t done messing with Lelouch yet.

On the other side: Enjoying Macross, but I’m really wishing Alto-hime would make up his damn mind already. One minute he appears to be all up on Ranka, even visiting her clandestinely via window. The next minute, he’s running through a rainy street looking for Sheryl, which in many shows (Including at least one other this season) is the final flag/hurdle for a love confession.

Seriously, I wish that boy would make up his mind. The one good thing, in the meantime, is that Klan/Mikael is full speed ahead. I’m thinking it’ll be official by the end of the series, and I sort of hope they actually spend some time on it, because they honestly make a very cute couple (though I do prefer Klan’s Macronized form).

For some reason, my gut tells me Sheryl won’t die. I think the director is actually enjoying bucking the trend on death pools: After all, all signs pointed to dead Ozma up to the last few minutes of the ep in 17. It feels like Sheryl needs to find her feet again and prove she can make it apart from Grace. I don’t think her story is meant to be tragic. I still won’t say one way or another which way the Alto/Ranka/Sheryl triangle will head, but I’m expecting a Ranka/Sheryl joint concert before the show ends.

  2. Lulu has no choice but trust Lulu. He knows Rolo is royal to him but he doesn’t think Rolo is royal to him to the extend that he would kill Nanaly.
That’s why his original plan was asked Suzaku for help. but that failed.

  3. I know what you mean Jobrill. We thought Lulu was smarter than that. He should have had a hidden camera on Rolo or something at the very least. He has to know if Rolo would kill Shirley, then he would easily kill Nunnally. We dropped lulu a couple of notches after this episode.

Also agree that there won’t be happy Kallen x Lelouch ending.

  4. Lol, I don’t think Sheryl’s gonna sing to death though.
