It’s been so long since we’ve had a Hosaka award winner that we feel it’s necessary to explain what this award is all about.  ‘The Weekly - Funniest Scene not Involving Hosaka - Award’ highlights gut busting funny moments in anime. The award is obviously named in honor of Hosaka sempai from Minamki-Ke (& Minami-ke Okawari), who has a screen time to gut busting laughter ratio of 92% - the highest such ratio in the history of anime.  Winners of the award get to bask in all the sweaty glory that is Hosaka.  Don’t believe Hosaka deserves an award named after him?  Well check these scenes out.  If you don’t laugh at one of those scenes you either don’t have a soul or are Setsuna F. Seiei.

Cheer up Hosaka…we’ve finally found a worthy winner of the Hosaka award

So why haven’t we had a winner since May?  We’ll simply because of a lack of great comedic shows on air during Spring and Summer 08.  Just take a look at the top shows of the season (Kurenai, Toshokan Sensou, Macross Frontier, Code Geass R2, etc), they’re terrific shows but no comedy in the bunch. Sure shows like Itazura na Kiss and Special A bring out giggles occasionally, but not the gut busting laughter.  But this past week saw the return of Hosaka’s brother from a different mother, who upon his immediate arrival back on the scene - brought the funny back.

So The Weekly - Funniest Scene not Involving Hosaka - Award goes to Sunohara Youhei for his masterful performance in CLANNAD 24: Tomoyo’s Story.  Who knew Sunohara was so passionate about vegetables?  Apparently he is and he has a specific was about eating his bento.  We can totally relate. We have a buddy who eates he’s Subway sandwiches in a weird way.  This guy always grabs a grabs a footlong combo with chocolate chip cookies and a coke. What he does is east half of the sub, the proceeds to eat both cookies and then the second half of the sub.  We maintain that since the cookies is essentially a desert, it should not be eaten until the sub is completely finished.

We love the Vegetable Prince

Besides Tomoyo and Tomoya, the only character from season 1 to be featured in CLANNAD 24 was Sunohara. And his persance was definetly needed for comic relief.  Watching this scene with Sunohara and Tomoya reminded us just how hilarious this show can be, and how none of the series currently on the air can match them.

Your Thoughts: Are any of the Summer 08 Anime shows bringing the funny back?
