That’s right we’re taking the pudding fight to the next level.  We’ scrapped the weekly highlights of Itazura na Kiss in favour of a weekly battle with between it and Special A.  Don’t be too upset fans of highlights & lowlights, you can still expect to see the same nonsensical, incoherent ramblings here.

Comedy

Now both series are not on the same level as Love Com by when it comes to romantic comedies. But they can bring the funny on occasion and in the battle of episode 14’s Itazura came out on top. It can be argued that a lot of the funny of Itakiss came from the shear craziness of episode 14.  When you step back and analyze what happed in this episode it is a little funny and unrealistic that Kotoko and Naoki went from almost marrying other people to getting hitched with the span of 3 weeks.

But the reason that Itakiss actually wins this category is because there were actually genuinely funny scenes in episode 14.  We completely cracked up during the scene where Naoki asks Kotoko’s dad for his blessing for the marriage. Then there was also the scene where Chris tells Kotoko she has found handsome, sexy man that she has fallen head over heels in love with - that man is the sexy beast himself - Kin-chan.

Special A really didn’t bring the funny in this episode.  Having Akira beat the the crap out of Tadashi wasn’t funny the first time we saw it, and it isn’t funny now that we’ve seen it for the ninth time.  Call it a landslide victory for Itazura na Kiss.

Winner: Itazura na Kiss

Hard to tell whose happier about the hookup, Kotoko or Oba-sama

Romance

Since these are both romantic comedies, it’s only fair they be evaluated on how the much romantic goodness the episodes pack in.

When it comes to romance, Special A has had very little of it over the past 14 episodes. Sure there has been some crushing but not romance.  And this episode of Special A didn’t have much as well.  But it was the first episode that we got clear proof that Tadashi loves Akira. It’s been something alluded to in past episode, but Tadashi stepped up his game in episode 14.  We like Tadashi more than Kei, so we hope he gets the girl he’s been crushing on.

Regardless of what happened in this episode, it doesn’t hold a candle to the level of romance in most Itazura na Kiss episodes, especially episode 14.  Episode 14 of Itazura na Kiss was the pay-off episode that most fans have been waiting for.  In this episode we had Naoki kissing Kotoko, Naoki admitting  to love Kotoko, Naoki asking her dad for Kotoko’s hand in marriage, Naoki and Kotoko telling their admirers that they love each other, and Naoki and Kotoko getting married.  You just can’t complete with this much romance. Itazura na Kiss is already called the Bible for Romance Manga, and the way things are looking it has the pontential of becoming Video Bible for Romance Anime.  The scene of Naoki and Kotoko in the rain, while kinda cliché was pulled of really well.  Asuna shed a tear when Naoki told Kotoko she didn’t have to count any more.  Kira would have shed a tear if he wasn’t laughing at the time.  For the record Asuna’s favorite scene was the wedding scene. Both Kotoko and Naoki looked beautiful, and Kotoko picked the perfect time to get a little cheeky with Naoki.

Winner: Itazura na Kiss

Story

Special A episode 14 actually did have some solid plot development.  Besides the whole Tadashi loves Akira thing, the other main big reveal was the reason why Yahiro is a prickly bastard.  So apparently there is a method to his madness.  So we guess now that we know Yahiro was doing what he did to protect Akira in his own way, we can’t hate on the guy.  But we had one problem with this episode.  It was giving off this vibe that rich people are superior than all others.  This may have to do with Yahiro’s reasoning for doing what he did, but we’ve been getting this vibe for a few episodes now and its kinda bother us.

Check this one off as a landslide victory for Itazura na Kiss EP 14.  This one episode contained more plot development than the entire series of Special A.  There was so much to like about episode 14 of ITakiss that we can’t remember them all. The only compliant we have is that we would have like to have seen the period of Kotoko and Naoki being engaged lasting more than 10 minutes on screen, a couple of episodes would have been nice. But really what can you not like about this episode, even the little twist of Chris falling in love with Kin-chan was hilarious.  Same goes for Yuuki Man-ing up and agreeing to take over his dad’s company so that Naoki can pursue his dreams of being a doctor.  But perhaps the best thing about this episode is that you felt a complete range of emotions as a viewer watching this.  You felt the love between Kotoko and Naoki, you felt happy for them, you laughed, you felt sad for kin-chan, and you begin to wonder if the series will really have a happy ending or not. We hate to say this but you could have one of these two dying by series ends.  Pray to the anime gods that this doesn’t happen.

Winner: Itazura na Kiss EP 14

  1. I just needed to read the title of the post to know who the winner would be… Then again, I didn’t watch ep 14 of S.A. and I’m deathly prejudiced against the show, so there :P

  2. Comparing the best episode of Itazura na Kiss with an okay episode of SA (and Okay for SA isn’t even a normal okay). I was pretty sure I knew who would win this one. Itazura na Kiss is the better anime anyway and this competition is on its best episode yet.

If you keep putting Itazura na Kiss up against SA, I doubt it will ever lose.
