Asuna has said all along that this is her favorite new anime from spring 08 - what can she say, she’s a Shoujo freak. But Kira honestly has never understood why the manga of Itazura na Kiss has been often called the “Bible for Romance Manga”.  Until recently that is, even he has to agree that this series is getting pretty good.  While it may not be as good as the manga, it’s probably the best of the romance anime out right now.

See even Yuuki is surprised to see his brother kiss a girl

30 Second Summary

  • Kotoko hasn’t given Kin-chan an answer to his question, and continues to mull it over.
  • Somehow Kotoko ends up spending the day with Chris and Naoki. And is with them when Chris is introduced to Naoki’s mom.  Mrs Irie doesn’t hide the fact that she thinks Chris is a whore.
  • Kotoko tries to forget about Naoki, who says he really does like Chris, by going on another date with Kin-chan.
  • Yuuki knows that it was Naoki that kissed Kotoko while she slept under the tree.
  • Kin-chan tries to force himself on Kotoko, but soon realizes that she still loves Naoki.

We think Mrs Irie is awesome, and she was in fine form today

Asuna’s Highlights

That’s my girl! The reason I like Kotoko so much is because she reminds me a lot of myself. We even kinda look the same (hair).  And just like me, she’s one determined girl. Even when it seems like all hope is lost to her, she doesn’t stop loving Naoki.  You gotta admire that trait.

You can see the character growth before your eyes.  The anime as a whole has done a solid job of showing the growth of the characters.  Last episode we saw the huge steps Kin-chan as taken to become a man, and this time around it was the littlest cast member - Yuuki’s turn.  Even as his mom freaked out about Naoki and Chris’ relationship, Yuuki knew who his brother really loved.  But went the mature route of sticking to his belief that things would work out in the end instead of getting his mom involved, which they did.

I don’t know what the best way to describe it, but the emotional resonance really comes through in most episodes as they did in this one.  What I mean by that is you really feel as a viewer the emotions the characters are feeling.  You feel Kin-chan’s pain when he realizes that he can never be with Kotoko, you feel Kotoko’s sadness when she feels like she’s lost all hope of being with Naoki.  You even feel little Yuuki’s nervousness when he tries to speak with his older brother about Chris.  Gotta give the animators a major round of applause for this.

And really quickly, I’m digging the new ending of Ita-Kiss. Its has a very 80’s / early 90’s feel to it, which is very appropriate for this series.

Emotions our pouring out of Itazura, can you feel it?

Kira’s Lowlights

Is it me or done anyone else think that Sir Robbins looks the Monopoly bros guy minus the top hat?  Very similar indeed - get the lawsuit ready.

Not much in the way of lowlights either this week.  The last couple of episodes have been really solid with little to complain about.

The only issue I may have is probably the pacing of the episode.  But honestly that’s more of a personal issue because I’m so used to watching action anime like Geass and Macross too much.

Final Thoughts: The anticipation for each new episode has reached Geass / MF levels.
