In this week’s Random Anime Award will be taking a look at the best use of engrish in an episode this week. We personally love it when japanese speaking anime attempt engrish, the results are pretty hilarious.
Shee caun speke goud engrish
Don’t be mistaken though - we’re not hating on anime directors for attempting English. But you do have to wonder if there is no native English speaking foreigners in Japan they could hire. But it’s just not the Japanese entertainment industry that’s does this kind of stuff. Hollywood is notoriously guilty for being lazy like this. Just the yesterday we were watching an episode of Law & Order CI and they had an Italian planning an East-Indian guy, and trying to pull of speaking the accent. What was Russell Peters not available or something?
Anyways on to the award
Engrish has been around in anime for many many years. It was the fad in the 80’s & 90’s for the pilots in mecha shows to yell out there attacks in English. And even today you’ll find a engrish sprinkled into many opening and closing scenes of anime. A Bonus Koibito Point for anyone who knows which series and OP song this little classic engrish line comes from - “Cause I’m never gone stop streaking my dream!”.
Random Anime Award: Best Use of Engrish in an Episode this Week - Itazura Na Kiss
Meet Christine Robbins, she supposed to be a ‘dazzling’ American girl who recently arrived in Japan for a marriage interview. While the dazzling part is debatable - we personally think she looks like an over grown cabbage patch kid - you still figure that being fresh of the boat from the US means she could speak English relatively well. Apparently not - take a look at this.
Irie’s egrish is acceptable and actually sounds better than the “native English” speak Christine. Meh, whatever - the engrish actually makes the episode more enjoyable. We hope more shows do it.
