As you can tell from our site, here at KA we are big fans of CLANNAD - both the visual novel and the anime. So anytime we get more CLANNAD content, is a good a thing in our opinion. And yesterday Kyoto Ani posted a 30 second trailer of CLANNAD: Tomoyo-hen (Tomoyo Edition), which will arrive on Japanese shelves on July 16th (via ANN). We’re happy pandas - hold on a second while we place a pre-order.
So now it’s speculation time. Since it’s only a 30 minute OVA, it’s not like it can retell the whole Tomoyo story from the visual novel. And from what you can see in the trailer, it doesn’t appear that the OVA will be about the Tomoyo after story either. So what part what will the OVA be about? Will it follow the cannon of the visual novel? Will it be a new story all together? And most importantly - will it be any good? Allow us “experts” (read: drunk and on a laptop) to make some “bold” predictions.
Story - Original or VN retelling?
The trailer is very short, besides the still shots, there is maybe 10-15 seconds on content. So from the little we’ve seen, we have no basis for this prediction. We figure the story of the OVA will be based on a plot line from the VN. Probably the part of the story where Tomoyo & Tomoya are together, but face difficult times as Tomoya nears graduation. That probably will be more interesting that focusing the story on T&T hooking up. Either is fine with us.
Also expect the OVA to pretty much star Tomoyo & Tomoya, don’t expect the other girls to get much screen time (or Sunohara). It would be kind of weird to have Nagisa appear in the OVA since the second season of the series will focus on Nagisa x Tomoya. You can find our predictions for that here.
The big question is if this will be any good. Good news is that unlike the CLANNAD movie, the OVA will be produced by Kyoto Ani, who did the original series. So no worries about them replacing voice actors or anything like that (you know - crap Toei likes to pull). We don’t expect it to be great, but it’s nice to have something while wait for the second season of CLANNAD.
Now if they would only make a Sunohara focused OVA. And no, not the Sunohara x Tomoya yaoi kind. More of something like Sunohara X Fuuko (jk), or something else where Sunohara sets out in search for love. It could be epic.

Being an avid Tomoyo fan, this ova gets me really excited. I’m confident KyoAni will pull it off well.
As for Sunohara searches for love…. heh that’s exactly what happens in the Sunohara/Mei route right? lol if they animate that. (Prob not gona happen though)
