Macross Frontier Deathwatch 2008

You know what someone needs to invent - a website where you can place bets on which anime characters will die in a series. Why? Because a cheat sheet like this would become valuable, instead of just the vodka inspired ranting of two cute anime fans.

Who will become stardust like the crew of this ship?

So just like we did for Code Geass, we’re taking a look at the main characters of the series and predicting the likelihood of them surviving a whole series. Now whether this series ends at its current planned 26 episodes, or if they pull a Geass and have the series extend to 50 is not yet determined. Considering how good this series has been, we are kinda hoping for another season, as long as they don’t pull a Geass style cliff hanger ending.

Purple Emo Boy

At this point, we don’t really care what this guy’s real name is - we’re going to keep calling him Purple Emo Boy (PEB). Why? Because he has a purple fighter, he’s sooooo emo, and as far as we can tell he’s a boy - although the look is very androgynous, so who knows.

PEB is the first face we have of the bad guys. Up until know the Macross Frontier crew has pretty much been fighting non descript aliens. But now with PEB we finally have an enemy with a face. So two things are likely to happen with PEB, one he’s going to die a slow painful death (keep your fingers crossed), or two - he’ll switch sides and join up with Team Bishounen (our name for Luca, Mikhil and Alto). Lets all hope for death.

Chance of Death: 80% - the bad guy always dies in these types of series.

Ozuma Lee

This guy has Roy Focker written all over him. And its likely, he could die a focker-style death. A Focker style death basically would mean sacrificing himself to save Alto or Ranka. As to when this will happen, we’re saying episode 20 or 21. Needless to say Ranka will totally lose it when this happens.

Chances of Death: 70%

He’s so much cooler than the lead character - meaning he’ll probably die

Mikhil

The womanizer with an Onee-chan complex is probably going to die in our opinion. It really just comes down to the basic principle that not all the good guys can survive. And if Ozuma survives then Mikhil better start planning his funeral.

Death will come in the battlefield we predict, and maybe at the hands of PEB. We figure PEB is good for one take down and at this point its probably Mikhil or Ozuma as his likely targets.

Chance of Death: 65%

This series could use one less pretty boy

Grace - Sheryl’s Manager

We have a feeling she’s with the bad guys. Otherwise there is really no explanation for her spying in on the Presidents meeting. And it also seems like she was the one who gave PEB the order to launch in ep 9.

If she is with the bad guys, then it brings to light another questions. Is Sheryl with them too. You know if she is you can pretty much forget about the Alto X Sheryl hookup. It will be Alto and Ranka all the way.

Chance of Death: 60% - Maybe Sheryl will be the one doing the killing.

Green skin + purple eyes + glasses = evil

Klein Klan

One of our favorite characters in the series, especially in Meltrandi form. But we’re kinda of concerned for her safety. She got pwned by PEB in the last episode and Alto was able to go toe to toe against him. So if he has to go against PEB without Alto around she could be a gonner.

If Klan is a goner we think she’ll go out in blaze of glory in one hell of a dog fight. We’ll be sad panda’s if this happens though.

Luca

Between Luca and Mikhil, we saw Luca is more likely to survive. Even though he does venture more into the front lines than Mikhil who snipes from the back. We wonder if Luca can actually take care of himself in the battle field. How long can he go without fighting an enemy in battle? All important things to know before predicting the chance of death. But you figure since he’s an SMS pilot, that there is some skill there.

Chance of Death: 40%

Cheer up buddy, you won’t die … probably

Sheryl

In all likelihood both of the series’ lead females will survive the whole show. They certainly did in the original macros. But of the two Sheryl has the higher chance of death at this point. Who kills Sheryl will be determined by what team she’s playing for. If she, PEB and Grace are all on the same side, then we say the person who should do the killing is Alto. That would be so emotional - one time (potential) lovers turned bitter enemies. Now if she is with Team Bishounen, then all bets are off. She could be killed by an Assign, or even an exploding Mic.

Chances of Death: 20%

Ranka

Deculture has yet to play a role in the series, and we think it’s only a matter of time till it does. And since Ranka knows a song of Deculture she’s bound to survive. We’d be two surprised Panda’s if Ranka died, but it would be one hell of a twist.

Chances of Death: 10%

Too moe to die???

Alto

Now some series may have the guts to kill off the hero of the series (Zeta Gundam), but we don’t think Macross will. The series is over the minute Alto dies, and you don’t see it happening too much in series nowadays. Rather than die, we think Alto will do a lot of killing, and we don’t see him experiencing Kira or Renton type regret.
